Storage Water Heater No Hot Water: Replaced the Burned Relay on Rheem EHG-55S at One Leicester on 13 Jun 2024

The customer experienced an issue with no hot water from their Rheem EHG-55S storage water heater. After contacting Homeone, our office team arranged for an on-site assessment to inspect the existing power supply connections, heating element, and thermostat of the Rheem storage water heater.
In many cases, issues with storage water heaters, including models like the Rheem EHG-55S, are due to electrical connection faults or problems with the heating element and thermostat. These components can typically be replaced with Rheem spare parts.
Our technician reported that the relay and wire were burnt due to a loose wire connection. Following the site assessment, our office team discussed the findings with the customer and advised replacing the relay and damaged wire. The replacement carried out by our technician was performed safely and in compliance with Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) regulations.

Storage Water Heater No Hot Water, Burned Relay and Wire Replacement Work Scope:

1. Site Inspection and Planning

Start by inspecting all wiring connected to the storage water heater, ensuring that the wires are 2.5mm in size, as required.
Then, check the heater switch, relay, and isolator to confirm they are the correct size and that the wire connections are properly secured.
In this instance, our technician discovered that the relay was burned.
If no damage is found on the relay, our technician will proceed to inspect the storage water heater’s heating element, thermostat, and wire connections on the heater side.

2. Replacing the Burn Relay and Wire

Replacing the burnt relay and wires involves removing the damaged components, evaluating the extent of the damage, and installing new, correctly rated parts.
This process ensures the system’s safety, restores proper functionality, and prevents further electrical issues, maintaining reliable operation.

3. Electrical Work to Comply with LEW Regulations

Ensure that all electrical connections and components adhere to Licensed Electrical Worker (LEW) regulations.
This includes testing proper earthing, secure installation practices, and compliance with safety standards to guarantee the system operates safely and effectively.

4. Light Bulb Test

This test ensures the relay and the isolator receive power and function properly.
It involves connecting a light bulb to the relay circuit; if the bulb lights up, the relay is getting power.
This simple check helps verify their operational status and reliability.

5. Check Hot Water Receiving and Commissioning

Test and commission the system to confirm the hot water supply to both the basin mixer and rain shower, ensuring they are functioning correctly.
This process ensures optimal performance and reliability of the hot water system.

6.  Clean Up Before Leaving

Clean the work area thoroughly, removing all debris and leaving the space immaculate.
Ensure that no remnants of materials or tools are left behind, maintaining a tidy and professional environment.
